Wayfinding Banner Program

Vertical banners along Kamehameha Avenue to share with residents and visitors alike some of the wonderful things to be discovered in Downtown Hilo. These banners can be used for events, programs, and promotional activities of the downtown community. What do you think of the banners? Do you like them? Are they helpful?

  1. It would be nice if some of the banners would say mahalo and/or welcome to visitors during events such as the Merrie Monarch…

  2. I like Susan’s idea of colorful banners by local artists. I would love to see them highlight native flowers, rather than the exotics.

  3. I agree with Susan, street banners should be simple in design and colorful.  In addition, and I can’t believe no one else has put 1 + 1 together, in hanging flower baskets.  This side of the island, and especially Hilo, should be ablaze in native orchids, perennials, and annuals.

  4. I think Manu makes a good point.  Need to be cautious on using banners to advertise.  Reading is difficult because of size and can be distracting.  I prefer a simple design with use of colors.  Ala Moana Center has some nice attractive banners.

  5. Well, we could coordinate the closing of Mamo Street for market days with hanging banners on Mamo Street, so as to feel like an outdoor walking promenade… how about it?

  6. I think they would be perfect if they were in a walking mall area.

  7. With all due respect, I think they detract from the natural scenery.  They also are distracting to visitor motorists and and local drivers as well causes them to not pay attention at pedestrian crossings.  Sorry.

  8. The banners definitely make you feel that you are in a special place.  It adds more vibrancy and color.  How about a competition between local artists to design the next banner – maybe, with a focus on flowers.
