Restaurant Row on Keawe St

An outdoor dining scene in Hilo!
Hilo needs a place where there’s a buzz of activity going out in the evening. Of course, the tables are going to need umbrellas, or maybe awnings given Hilo’s weather, but for the most part, the weather is too nice to have to eat indoors.
Keawe St. between Mamo and Haili would be a good place for it.

  • I love the idea of a resturaunt row on Keawe Street.  I would actually like to see the area expanded down to Mamo Street.  that would give people more variety.  I would also like to see the area between Keawe street and Bayfront a pedestrian only area.  I know that is probably not possible but there is too much traffic cutting through the heart of Hilo.  There’s adequate parking across Bayfront and people can walk into Downtown Hilo.  Just an idea.  Also, I hope I do not offend anyone here but the mural on Keawe street, next to Spencer’s Gym is pretty awful.  It looks like art one would find in East LA.  I think we can do much better with artists who understand the culture better.  E kala mai if I offended anyone.

    1. Aloha all, I was wondering if anyone knew of any restaurants in the downtown area that would be interested in renting their kitchen/restaurant 2 days a week? I am looking for any day (Monday-Thursday) to do a $25 4 course vegan dinner in the evenings and Saturday 10-3pm doing a buffet vegan brunch. If anyone has any information on any business that may be able to work with me, please contact me at christineleetyler@yahoo.com Mahalo!

    2. It looks like the sucess of PINEAPPLES on the corner of Keawe & Mamo demonstrates that Hilo is ready for a Keawe Resturaunt Row and Outdoor dining.

    5. I don’t think the community has a big role in driving this idea.  It’s all about the existing landowners and the merchants who want to use them.  Designating an area for resturant use is not something that happens because folks say they’d like to see it.  Downtown has a robust resturant environment.  Let’s support what we have.

    6. Restaurant Row is already here – well, maybe, not with the outdoor scene, yet – but we do have lots of places to eat on Keawe street. Yes. they extend all the way down to Wailuku River. It’s also the perfect street since it has the widest sidewalks.
We even have new places, such as Lucy’s Taqueira, which opened in December, 2011 .  Also, looks like Casa de Luna is almost ready!  We just need to promote and advertise ”Keawe Street as Restaurant Row” - more eateries will naturally open.  Downtown will surely become a vibrant town at night!
