Adopt-a-Bin ['60 Likes' on September 24, 2012!]

Recycle Hawaii would like to implement an Adopt-a-Bin Program by enlisting local businesses to purchase and maintain a recycling bin.  Let’s ‘go green’ and increase recycling opportunities throughout the Downtown Hilo area! Here’s a photo of some very nice bins available from a mainland company. We want to place these bins where they are needed and can be maintained without overtaking sidewalks. Downtown is a walkable community and we want to keep our sidewalks pedestrian friendly. If we place a bin on the sidewalk we will also need a permit.  We need your ideas!

Where in Downtown Hilo would you like to see recycle bins?

How can we incentivize businesses to Adopt-a-Bin that can be placed on their property or in public spaces?

Besides businesses, are there any organizations who can help to ensure that these bins are emptied?

Do you have a business that wants to sponsor a bin?

Stay updated!

    1. Hilo Guitars and Ukuleles, Ken’s top comment, are you still interested Ken?  If you are, let’s work together with Kristine and make it happen near your shop on Ponahawai Street as a model!  Call me or email me if you’re interested!

    2. Well, now that we have over 60 likes the next step is making this a reality. The idea here is that businesses would monitor the bins, which means they would have to be located close to that business for easy access.  Each business could arrange to have someone else monitor the bin for them. For instance, I know there are people who regularly retrieve Hi5s from the trash cans and recycle bins around town.  Maybe some of these folks would be interested in something more formal. We already have a bin adopted and stationed in front of Jack’s Diving Locker in Kona.  Event though the bin is specifically for Hi5s, people deposit other recycleables (and some trash). One person at Jack’s is responsible for the bin and it seems that the return on the redeemables is worth the effor

    3. The idea is that whoever adopts a bin would service it.  They could be adopted by local businesses or youth groups that need to do some fundraising.

    4. Great idea! Would it be possible to have the bins fabricated on-island from recycled materials by local vendors?

    5. This is a great idea and although businesses may sponsor the purchase of a bin…who will maintain the bin?  Often I have walked downtown and found many of the current bins and cans full and rubbish on the sidewalk.  Is this or will this be the County’s responsibility?  They seem to have a problem maintaining the current system.
